What is renal cryotherapy?
Renal cryotherapy involves freezing the tumor to destroy cancerous cells. Typically the tumor is not removed. The benefit of crotherapy is the there is less risk of blood loss since the kidney is not incised.
The technique involves placing probes into the tumor either with the aid of laparoscopy or under CT guidance. The probes transfer gases into the tumor which freeze the cancer to below 100 degrees celsius essentially destroying them. The procedure is planned so that freezing of normal kidney tissue is minimized. The advantages of cryotherapy include quicker recovery and less bleeding. Disadvantages include a higher chance of cancer recurrnece than with standard surgical approaches.
