Frequently, and fortunately, men will be told that the biopsy did not show the presence of cancer. The majority of such men can return to routine monitoring with an annual PSA and DRE.
Some men will require another biopsy, however. If the original biopsy shows atypical cells or high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN) more biopsies may be indicated since the chance of finding cancer on repeat biopsy is over 30%. When the PSA is greater than 10, another set of biopsies may be warranted. For men with a rising PSA, or a PSA between 4 and 10 associated with a lower Percent-free PSA, a second set of biopsies may be indicated within 6 to 12 months.
